MEET OUR TEAM

MARIA KELLY

FOUNDER | EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I planted the seed of AMOR Healing Kitchen after a 14 year career in teaching high school in Charleston County. My love for plant-based food, local farms, working with teenagers, and supporting people in a time of need is the foundation of AMOR.  I had been with my mom during her journey of a Colon cancer diagnosis and she was the one that instilled in me a love of cooking and healthy food.  Growing up, no matter how busy everyone was, we always sat down together at the dinner table. I learned at an early age, that food connects us and heals us. I would often cook for  my mom and take her food when she wasn't feeling well and I felt that  was a little bit of comfort and strength that I could offer her during that time. Being a teacher for 14 years showed me that the youth have so  much to offer in shaping the future of our community if you offer them the tools to guide them.  When I learned of an organization in California that works with teens and serves people with health challenges,  I just had this deep feeling of connection and that something similar could work in Charleston. We have an abundance of local, organic farms and I believe getting back to the earth for our food will cure us of many of our chronic diseases. AMOR is bringing that to the table, made with love.

KENNY VEASEL

CULINARY DIRECTOR

I would describe myself as a Journeyman Chef with 30 years experience in the kitchen and leadership. Beginning my journey as a dishwasher in 1994, I have worked my way through the ranks of the industry gaining knowledge and skills through the guidance of supportive and informative leaders. I understand the importance of mentorship like few others because My successes are the result of others sharing their skills and experience with someone willing to learn. I am known as a level-headed and compassionate leader who prides himself with passing on what I have learned to others. The “Big Brother” mentality engrained in me as a child instilled a collaborative teaching mindset that lies at the core of my being. After many years of financial and performative success, I find myself wanting something more out of this career path than happy tourists and monetary gain. I am currently on a mission to find the right place for me. I have proven to my self and others that I will succeed in pretty much any kitchen but, I AMOR is the right place for me to lay roots for possibly the rest of my professional life.

KATY FIRTH

OPERATIONS DIRECTOR

Katy is a Charleston transplant by way of New York, Tennessee, Maryland, North Carolina & a brief stint in chilly Massachusetts. Now that she has found her home, she can be found taking advantage of all Charleston has to offer. From spending time on the same beaches where she vacationed as a child, to teaching yoga, to exploring the many parks, restaurants and book clubs, she loves her town and the beautiful people she has met along the way. She also loves to spend time at her cabin outside of Brevard where she hikes and bikes with her husband.

Katy was thrilled to get involved with AMOR when the idea was presented to her and has been supporting AMOR since day one. She has been directly affected by cancer, as many people have been, and had hoped to find an avenue to support patients and caregivers. Her sister, Jennie, does outstanding fundraising for cancer research, so being a part of AMOR gives her the opportunity to follow in her footsteps in a different, but still significant way.

MIMI KOZMA

ASSISTANT CHEF

A decade ago, I embarked on a mission to explore the ‘world of food.’. This journey, filled with diverse experiences, has significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth. Food is not just a product on a store shelf; it's a connection to the individuals who cultivate it. I commit to reestablishing a bond with the Earth and understanding the life-giving processes. I prioritize real, nourishing foods that foster optimal health and have the potential to heal and prolong life. My focus is on my responsibility towards other humans, animals, and our planet regarding nutrition, health, and well-being. My vision is to underscore the significance of comprehending the power of food in human existence, the necessity for balance in nature, and how this relationship impacts the larger community.

So, during one of my web searches for a plant-based kitchen in Charleston, I came across Amor Healing Kitchen. I could not have found a place that better matched me than Amor.  After moving to the area, I asked to volunteer in the kitchen. It felt like home from my first day, and nearly four years later, I am still on this journey of growth, experience, gratitude, and joy. On weekends, you can find me at the beach with my husband, spending time with my daughter (if she isn’t too busy…wink, wink), or cuddling with my cats, finding the perfect balance in life.
